Workshop II-III
The coastlines are ever-changing landscapes in flux. The coastline is never the same on two consecutive days. Likewise, the shores of Istanbul have been shaped by the forces of waters, breezes, and landfills, entangled with ambitious ideals, ideologies, and ambitions.
Led by Gökçen Erkılıç, the workshop aims to explore the deep cartographic layers that form the coastline and trace the disappearing interfaces of land and water. Drawing from Erkılıç’s project “Istanbul Coastline Atlas,” the workshop will integrate map archives, aerial photographs, satellite images, and archival documents through drawing and collaborative mapping methods.
“Istanbul Coastline Atlas” is a multi-layered archive and visualization project at the intersection of critical cartography and digital and spatial humanities. The project focuses on the coastline as an alternative narrative of urbanization and how human activities reconfigure the coastal landscape.
This free-admission program will be held in Turkish and is open to all, especially students with an interest in urban studies and architecture. Participation is limited to 12 people. Participants are expected to bring a laptop for use during the workshop. For more information and application, click here.
“Istanbul Coastline Atlas” is supported by the 2024 Salt Research Funds and Northeastern University College of Arts Media and Design. The workshop is realized with STABILO’s Salt Interpretation support.
Gökçen Erkılıç is a transdisciplinary artist, architect, and academic. Her practice focuses on water and borders, critical mapping, feminist geography, and spatial justice. She is the founder of Coastliners Lab, where she challenges traditional forms of mapping and explores the decolonial and social potential of mapping and its interaction with art and technology.
