Salt is hosting the screening of Bir İsim ve Bir Yer [A Name and a Place], a documentary film by Can Eskinazi on Swiss artist Renée Levi.

Born in Istanbul in 1960 and immigrated to Switzerland at the age of six, Renée Levi draws inspiration from her birthplace and Sephardic heritage in her works. In the past decade, she has gained widespread recognition for her public art projects in Switzerland and numerous exhibitions in France, Germany, and Italy. In September 2022, the artist returned to Istanbul—the city that represents both her childhood and the homeland of her parents—to realize two exhibitions and a public art installation.

Over the course of two weeks in Istanbul, filmmaker Can Eskinazi closely follows Levi through exhibition setups, openings, and wanderings in the city. The film interweaves scenes of Levi’s daily life in Istanbul with her family history and artistic collaborations with her partner, Marcel Schmid, and musician Janiv Oron. Through this immersive lens, the film explores various themes, including femininity, migration, Sephardic heritage, international art collaborations, and artistic labor.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between director Can Eskinazi and filmmaker-researcher Deniz Tortum. This free-admission program is open to everyone. The conversation will be held in Turkish.
