Living Water (2021)
Director: Pavel Borecký
77 minutes
Arabic, English; Turkish and English subtitles
Living Water examines Jordan’s escalating water crisis, focusing on the Wadi Rum desert and the Bedouin communities residing there. Despite living above a vast aquifer, these communities struggle to access water, as large-scale agricultural enterprises and urban developments exploit the resources, often prioritizing commercial interests over local needs. Through the voices of specialists, workers, and residents, the film captures the intricate socio-economic and ecological tensions surrounding Jordan’s pursuit of “blue gold.”
Directed by Pavel Borecký, the documentary blends anthropology and visual ethnography to offer a critical examination of water politics in the region. It sheds light on the immediate challenges faced by indigenous communities and raises broader questions about sustainability, resource exploitation, and environmental justice in an era of increasing water scarcity.
Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder, Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone.
