El botón de nácar [The Pearl Button] (2015)
Director: Patricio Guzmán
82 minutes
Spanish, English; Turkish and English subtitles

El botón de nácar [The Pearl Button] intertwines the histories of the Indigenous water nomads of Chilean Patagonia and the victims of the Pinochet dictatorship, using two pearl buttons as symbolic connectors. Through poetic visual language, it reflects on Chile’s dark past, from the genocide of native tribes to the brutality suffered by political prisoners.

Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Script at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival, Patricio Guzmán’s film extends beyond historical events to explore the idea of water as a vessel of memory. Blending personal testimonies with striking cinematography, it draws parallels between the vastness of the ocean and the silenced voices of history to offer a meditation on memory, loss, and the power of remembrance.
