SALT Galata, Auditorium

SALT is organizing a classical music concert at SALT Galata in the scope of SALON; the fourth exhibition of the Modern Essays series which investigates different aspects of modernization in Turkey. Borusan Quartet will perform Yaylı Çalgılar Dörtlüsü [String Quartet]; a composition by Ulvi Cemal Erkin, which is the very first example of chamber music in contemporary Turkish music, composed between 1935-1936, and Ahmed Adnan Saygun’s Yaylı Çalgılar Dörtlüsü No.1 Op. 27 [String Quartet No.1 Op. 27]. The concert is realized in collaboration with Borusan Kültür Sanat.

The Borusan Quartet was founded in 2005 under the guidance of Maestro Gürer Aykal and is comprised of the group leaders of Borusan İstanbul Philharmonic Orchestra: Esen Kıvrak (1st violin), Olgu Kızılay (2nd violin), Efdal Altun (viola) and Çağ Erçağ (cello). Gerhard Schulz, a member of the Alban Berg Quartet, serves as music consultant. The repertoire of the Borusan Quartet encompasses a wide range of works from the classical period to the modern era with particular emphasis on the works of Turkish composers.

SALON (April 13-June 17, 2012; SALT Galata) presents a three-dimensional moment/section of diligence and simplicity from the Ankara of 1960s. The main display is the original furniture from Butik-A by designers Bediz and Azmi Koz. Borrowed from the apartment of composer Ulvi Cemal Erkin and pianist Ferhunde Erkin at Yeşiltepe Cooperative, designed by Rahmi Bediz and Demirtaş Kamçıl, the furniture point to a placid sensitivity in furniture design and production of the time. An intersection between different disciplines, SALON follows the progression of time and experiences through photo albums and interviews.

The concert will last approximately 50 minutes.
