Walk-in Cinema

Programmed in collaboration with filmmaker Yavuz Gözeller, founding director of Istanbul Experimental, this session explores the material, bodily, and sensory dimensions of cinematic language. Spanning from the 1990s to the present, the selection features short experimental films that employ various techniques such as direct animation, hand processing, and photochemical manipulation.

Not (A) Part, Vicky Smith, 2019, 6’
Using dead bees contact-printed onto celluloid, Not (A) Part mourns ecological disappearance while marking time frame by frame.

Hautnah/Skinflick, Thorsten Fleisch, 2002, 7’
Through imprints and textures of human skin, Hautnah/Skinflick examines surface as the tactile essence of film.

Noisy Licking, Dribbling and Spitting, Vicky Smith, 2014, 4’
Using stained tongue as a medium and a stamping pad, this animation exposes the mouth as a visceral tool.

Bloodlust, Thorsten Fleisch, 1998, 4’
In Bloodlust, the director applies his own blood onto the film leader, turning the body into both the subject and substance of cinema.

Lightwork I, Jennifer Reeves, 2007, 9’
Layering HD video and 16mm, Lightwork I is an exploration of medical imagery and institutional decay.

Wake, Eric Stewart, 2015, 8’
In Wake, the director embeds his father’s ashes into film emulsion, turning mourning and grief into a material image.

The free-admission screening is part of Forms of Care and is open to everyone. The films will be shown in their original languages with English and Turkish subtitles.

In accordance with Article 7 of Law No. 5224 amended on 18.01.2019, films that have not been assessed and classified by the General Directorate of Cinema, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey, can only be screened under the classification of 18+ at festivals, special screenings or similar culture and arts events.
