Öktem and Barutçuoğlu Archive
Öktem and Barutçuoğlu Archive is now accessible at archives.saltresearch.org.
Incorporated into the Education Archive at Salt Research, the collection brings together photographs related to the professional work of Lâtif Öktem (1894-1985), who served as a teacher, inspector, and director of education at Maarif Vekâleti (Ministry of Education), as well as the work of his sister, Bahriye Öktem, who served as the principal of Moda Elementary School.
Focusing on the educational history of the period, the collection includes images of schools inspected by Lâtif Öktem in the 1920s across Diyarbakır, Mardin, Balıkesir, Istanbul, Kırklareli, and Çanakkale; excursions with school principals, teachers, and students; Republic Day celebrations; and photographs of family members who migrated from Crimea to Romania and then to Istanbul. These materials are accompanied by Bahriye Öktem’s photographs with teachers and students at Moda Elementary School. In addition, the album compiled by Haluk Barutçuoğlu, husband of Tınçay Öktem (daughter of Lâtif and Kadriye Öktem), documents the ceremonies marking Hatay’s annexation to Türkiye, as well as schools, students, and scouts in official ceremonies in and around Antakya during the 1930s.
Photographs taken by local studios—including “Foto Yıldız, M. Danyal” in Diyarbakır, “Zeki Fotoğraf Stüdyosu” in Kadıköy, “Mazhâr Reşit” and “Foto Bahar” in Kırklareli, “Foto Seraydaryan” and “Foto Hikmet” in Antakya, and “Resne Photo Studio, Rahmizâde Bahaeddin” in Istanbul—also shed light on the history of photography studios of the period.
