Paradis [Paradise] (2022)
Director: Alexander Abaturov
89 minutes
Yakut; Turkish and English subtitles
In the summer of 2021, an unprecedented heatwave and prolonged drought triggered massive wildfires across northeastern Siberia, devastating nearly 19 million hectares of land. In the heart of the taiga, the village of Shologon was engulfed in smoke carried by the wind, signaling an imminent threat: the forest was burning, and the flames were rapidly approaching. Abandoned by state authorities, the inhabitants were left to confront the disaster on their own, organizing collectively to fight what they call “the Dragon.”
Paradis [Paradise] documents a struggle for survival at the frontlines of climate catastrophe, revealing both the vulnerability and resilience of those living in one of the planet’s most extreme environments.
The film will be screened on Saturday, February 21 at 16.00 in the Walk-in Cinema at Salt Beyoğlu. The free-admission screening is realized with the support of Institut Français Istanbul and is open to everyone.
