L’Arbre de l’Authenticité [The Tree of Authenticity] (2025)
Director: Sammy Baloji
89 minutes
French, Dutch; Turkish and English subtitles
Located along the Congo River, the INERA Research Station at Yangambi was once a major center of scientific research during the colonial era. Today, it stands as a landscape of overlapping jungle and ruin, where questions of knowledge, authority, and access continue to resonate.
Through the voices of Paul Panda Farnana and Abiron Beirnaert—two scientists who worked at Yangambi between 1910 and 1950—L’Arbre de l’Authenticité [The Tree of Authenticity] traces the ecological destruction initiated under colonial modernity. Moving between historical testimony and contemporary observation, the film reveals how scientific ambition, extraction, and environmental control have shaped enduring forms of ecological injustice.
Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Tuesday, February 24 at 19.00, the film will be streamed at saltonline.org between March 1–8. Online access is limited to audiences in Turkey.
