Havumetsän lapset [Once Upon a Time in a Forest] (2024)
Director: Virpi Suutari
93 minutes

Together with those of Sweden, Finland’s coniferous forests function as vital ecological “lungs” for Europe, yet nearly ninety percent are under threat from industrial logging.

Havumetsän lapset [Once Upon a Time in a Forest] focuses on a group of young environmental activists who challenge the political and economic systems that frame forests primarily as resources for extraction. The film follows Ida, Minka, Otto, and their peers as they move from institutional consultation processes to direct action against diverse forestry interests, documenting a struggle whose outcome—ecological survival or irreversible loss—rests increasingly on youthful resolve.

Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Thursday, February 26 at 19.00, the film will be streamed at saltonline.org between March 1–8. Online access is limited to audiences in Turkey.

In accordance with Article 7 of Law No. 5224 amended on 18.01.2019, films that have not been assessed and classified by the General Directorate of Cinema, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey, can only be screened under the classification of 18+ at festivals, special screenings or similar culture and arts events.
