The maps and photographs documenting the demolitions carried out for Tarlabaşı Boulevard between 1986 and 1988 have been added to the City, Society, and Economy Archive and are now accessible online.
Largely abandoned and damaged following the Wealth Tax of 1942 and the Istanbul pogrom of September 6-7, 1955, Tarlabaşı became a focal point of state-led urban transformation projects after intense waves of migration in the 1960s. During the boulevard construction that began in 1986, more than 300 buildings were demolished, and a significant portion of the area was expropriated.
The photographs in the collection document which buildings were expropriated, while the maps provide information on the blocks and parcels that fell within the boundaries of the boulevard project.
