SALT Galata, Workshop III

Lia Perjovschi will talk about the development of CAA (Contemporary Art Archive/Center for Art Analysis) and from the time it was established to the present at SALT Galata.

Lia Perjovschi established CAA (Contemporary Art Archive) at the beginning of 1990 (active under different names and practices since 1985) to recuperate 50 years’ (from 1950s to 1990s) lack of information on contemporary art and culture in the isolated communist Romania. As it developed during the transition time from communism to capitalism, the archive was transformed into the Center for Art Analysis in 1998, a platform which debates various cultural and social issues after the fall of communism. Now, in the capitalist Romania in the information age and globalized world, CAA/CAA has been recycled through the Knowledge Museum, an interdisciplinary project established in 1999. Always addressing the basic questions such as “What is art, artist, critic, curator, art institution today?”, “What are their roles, and what messages do they give in a constantly changing society?” it attempts to explore tools necessary to understand art, rather than analyzing the context of art. Knowledge Museum continues its activities by searching for critical, articulated attitudes and recuperating hidden, lost ideas and trying to make sense out of the findings.

Lia Perjovschi lives and works in Bucharest and Sibiu, Romania. She graduated from Art Academy Bucharest in 1993. Perjovschi presents her works in Romania, Europe, US, Asia, Africa, Middle East.

The talk will be held in English.
