SALT Beyoğlu, Walk-in Cinema
Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson are a collaborative duo based in Manchester and Berlin. To accompany the presentation of their works in the Walk-in Cinema at SALT Beyoğlu, they will talk about the development of their practice around power, its rhetorical structures and how the chance finding of a US military language programme prompted the development of their recent work The Opera (2011).
When working on The Opera, the artists were struck by the element of fantasy in a number of phrases used in the language programme. They describe not only points of verbal exchange but also imply imagined political and social situations –ones that do not exist in our current world, but are proper to a kind of military-political imagination. Within this context, the artists will explore how ideas of fantasy find their way into the languages of spectacle and political power, as well as how language serves as a vehicle for the movement from fantasy to brute actuality.
In addition to their collaborative work as artists, Nick Crowe is a Senior Lecturer on the MFA programme at Goldsmiths, London and Ian Rawlinson is Programme Leader on the MA Fine Art course at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The talk will be held in English.
