In the context of the exhibition Modern Times the television series The Shock of the New by acclaimed writer and art critic Robert Hughes, who passed away earlier this year, will be screened at SALT Beyoğlu. Considered a television classic, The Shock of the New focused on the changing history of art throughout the 20th century and covered developments in modern art, from the influence of mechanization, through conflicts between authority and art, tracing movements such as Surrealism and Expressionism.

“The basic project of art is always to make the world whole and comprehensible, to restore it to us in all its glory and its occasional nastiness, not through argument but through feeling, and then to close the gap between you and everything that is not you, and in this way pass from feeling to meaning. It’s not something that committees can do. It’s not a task achieved by groups or by movements. It’s done by individuals, each person mediating in some way between a sense of history and an experience of the world.” Robert Hughes
The Shock of the New

Episode 1: “Mechanical Paradise” (57 minutes)
Robert Hughes discusses Cubism, a movement started by Pablo Picasso and developed by Georges Braque, in which multiple viewpoints of a subject were compressed into a single view. Hughes details how African carvings and Spanish culture were a key influence for works such as Picasso’s Demoiselles D’Avignon.

Episode 2: “The Powers That Be” (55 minutes)
“The Power That Be” explores the relationship between art and authority by looking at Dadaism and the art of political movements such as fascism and Soviet communism. Featuring works by Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Otto Dix and George Grosz.

Episode 3: “The Landscape of Pleasure” (55 minutes)
Robert Hughes examines art’s relationship with the pleasures of nature, its place within the natural environment and man’s understanding of it. Featuring works by Georges Seurat, Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin.

Episode 4: “Trouble in Utopia” (56 minutes)
This edition deals with the aspirations and reality of the art in which we live, namely architecture. Utopian visions rarely work in reality and Robert Hughes examines the utopian in the parallel lines of concrete, towering verticals of steel and planes of glass of modernism in the buildings, built and planned, of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Gropius, which he contrasts with the paintings of Mondrian.

Episode 5: “The Threshold of Liberty” (56 minutes)
In this episode Robert Hughes exmaines the Surrealists’ attempts to make art without restrictions.

Episode 6: “The View from the Edge” (56 minutes)
Robert Hughes examines the work of the Expressionists, looking at artists such as Van Gogh, Munch, Bacon and Rothko, who exposed humanity’s deepest anxieties and darkest emotions in their art.

Episode 7: “Culture as Nature” (56 minutes)
“Culture as Nature” looks at how artists have reacted to television, advertising and film.

Episode 8: “The Future That Was” (56 minutes)
Robert Hughes slips down the decline of modernism while watching art without substance.
