Doryun Chong, who conceived the exhibition Taiping Tianguo and Cosmin Costinas, who organized the first presentation at Para Site in Hong Kong and the second at SALT Beyoğlu in İstanbul, will talk about the their research and the many contexts touched by the content and references of the exhibition.

Taiping Tianguo attempts to think of actual and concrete, as well as tenuous or even possibly non-existing connections between four Chinese artists - Ai Weiwei, Frog King Kwok, Tehching Hsieh and Martin Wong - who lived and worked in New York during the heady days of the 1980s and the early 1990s. The landscape of New York, during that period, was welcoming a diaspora of creative people, while at the same time experiencing the critical early years of the AIDS pandemic. At the same time in China the contemporary art scene was battling against authoritarian censorship and repression.

Chong and Costinas will also talk more generally about exhibition making methodologies, how exhibitions use their own specific language to write histories and how this can be done across multiple institutional contexts.

Doryun Chong is Associate Curator of Painting and Sculpture at MoMA, New York and initiated the curatorial platform A Future Museum for China. Cosmin Costinas is the Executive Director/Curator of Para Site, Hong Kong.

The talk will be held in English.
