Art Matters: How the Culture Wars Changed America, one of the many ground breaking publications co-edited by Brian Wallis, was published in 1999. Supported with a historical overview the book focused on the culture wars within the USA in the 1980s and 1990s. In his talk Wallis will revisit the unabated battle ground in the visual arts, involving matters such AIDS, freedom of expression, issues of gender, race, censorship, and funding.

Culture Wars has an urgency in terms of the arguments around the theme of “conservative art,” grand cultural designs, increasing instances of censorship, hostility towards cultural producers, the frailty of practice, as well as the probable overhaul of public funding in Turkey. The conversation will begin with a local contextualization of Culture Wars by Vasıf Kortun.

Brian Wallis is Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions, International Center of Photography, New York.
