Project for a Revolution, 2000
Duration: 3’14”
In Project for a Revolution a group of people participate in staged activities. Based on a meeting of student activists seen in the beginning of the film Zabriskie Point (Antonioni, 1970), Johanna Billing places the crowd of people in a room. The crowd of protagonists do not interact with each other, there are no conversations, creating an atmosphere in which they are seemingly waiting for something to happen. Due to the loop of the movie the unfocused energy of the participants seems neverending and caught in the moment.
Billing’s videos relate to the public and the private, often lack a narrative character and deal with issues related to social relations and what binds the individual to the collective. These social relations are clearly placed in contexts that have an awareness for changes within society, to scrutinize community feeling, group engagement, resistance and participation.
