Russian artists need help!

Art historian, curator, and writer Ekaterina Degot will talk about the political role of Manifesta 10 which will be hosted in Russia between June 28 and October 31. The European Biennial of Contemporary Art’s choice to hold their 10th exhibition in St. Petersburg has been met with strong criticism due to Russia’s “gay propaganda” law adopted in St. Petersburg, as well as Russian aggression in Ukraine and censorship/self-censorship issues in the region. Only two days before the opening, Degot aims to discuss the current situation based on the relationship between art and politics.

Living and working in Moscow and Cologne, Ekaterina Degot is known for her works on the sociopolitical and aesthetic issues of Post-Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe. She has recently been elected as Artistic Director of the Academy of the Arts of the World for a two-year period. She was the senior editor of Openspace.ru, an independent online magazine of art news and criticism until 2012. Together with David Riff she curated the first edition of a triennial in Norway, Bergen Assembly, in 2013. Degot is a regular contributor to Artforum, Frieze and e-flux magazines, and she is currently teaching at the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia.

The talk will be held in English.
