Blair French
Executive Director, Artspace Visual Arts Centre, Sydney
Curatorial Convenor, 6th SCAPE Christchurch Biennial of Art in Public Space

Blair French will trace the development of the 6th SCAPE Biennial, a project twice postponed due to major earthquakes, and discuss the particular challenges faced in working within a damaged urban and civic environment.

Since 1995, French has worked in art galleries and museums in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and has developed a dual career as a writer/curator in the fields of contemporary art and photography. His published works include the selection of essays Out of Time: Essays Between Photography and Art (2006), and a book on Australian photo-based contemporary art, Twelve Australian Photo Artists (2009), co-authored with Daniel Palmer and published by Piper Press, Sydney. French also contributed an essay to the publication accompanying Shaun Gladwell’s project for the Australian Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

French has lectured on New Zealand’s art history at the University of Waikato, NZ; on art history and theory at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales; and on visual communications at the University of Western Sydney.

The talk will be held in English.
