L'Internationale Online
has launched
KASK / School of Arts of University College Ghent and L’Internationale launched L’Internationale Online, a new online platform for research, resources and discussion, on September 18. With KASK as coordinator, L’Internationale Online is the joint initiative of KASK and the European museum confederation L’Internationale who are working together on a five-year programme: The Uses of Art – The Legacy of 1848 and 1989.
To mark this special occasion, Vasıf Kortun (Director, SALT Research and Programs and President of L’Internationale), Francesco Salvini (Fundación de los Comunes) and Luca Bergamo (Secretary-General, Culture Action Europe) discussed the relation between cultural civic institutions and democracy focusing on “Charter for Europe”, an open-process document proposed by the Fundación de los Comunes in February 2014. The event took place at KASK in Ghent and was moderated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez (Managing Editor of L’Internationale Online, KASK) and Steven ten Thije (Project Leader of L’Internationale, Van Abbemuseum).
“Charter for Europe” was written in the wake of one of the first major events of The Uses of Art programme: “The New Abduction of Europe”. Available on L’Internationale Online, this document is one of the concrete proposals that resulted from the vigorous debates and has been discussed and collectively edited online since.
L’Internationale Online
L’Internationale Online is a platform where commissioned speculative texts, research and artistic projects, which draw from the work and collections of the confederation, will be published on a monthly basis. The platform is organised into four research fields: “Politics of Life and Death”, “Decolonising Practices”, “Real Democracy” and “Alter Institutionality”. A lively discussion is instigated in the Opinion section, to which a group of invited bloggers contributes.
L’Internationale Online has the specific function to present the topics addressed in the various activities of L’Internationale in relation to one another, and The Uses of Art programme. It is a place where both differences and commonalities can appear and be debated.
The Uses of Art – The Legacy of 1848 and 1989
This five-year programme proposes new readings of European art history for the broader public. This new perspective on the past is anchored in the long history of civil society, tracing it back to the civic revolutions of 1848, through wars and social changes, to the revolutions of 1989, and then to the economic crises of today.
L’Internationale
L’Internationale is a confederation of six modern and contemporary art institutions. L’Internationale proposes a space for art within a non-hierarchical and decentralised internationalism, based on the values of difference and horizontal exchange among a constellation of cultural agents, locally-rooted and globally connected. It brings together six major European museums: Moderna galerija (MG, Ljubljana, Slovenia); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS, Madrid, Spain); Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA, Barcelona, Spain); Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen (M HKA, Antwerp, Belgium); SALT (Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey) and Van Abbemuseum (VAM, Eindhoven, The Netherlands).
L’Internationale works with complementary partners such as Grizedale Arts (GA, Coniston, United Kingdom); Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU, Liverpool, United Kingdom); Stiftung Universität Hildesheim (UH, Hildesheim, Germany) and School of Arts of University College Ghent (KASK, Ghent, Belgium), along with associate organisations from the academic and artistic fields.
The confederation takes its name from the workers’ anthem “L’Internationale”, which calls for an equitable and democratic society with reference to the historical labour movement.
