Francesca Dal Chele Archive

Photographer Francesca Dal Chele’s archive, featuring her series That Noise on the Horizon? focused on the Tarlabaşı neighborhood, can now be accessed at archives.saltresearch.org.

Developed between 2014 and 2023, the series questions how a controversial urban regeneration program is affecting Tarlabaşı and highlights the disenfranchised residents sidelined by this project. The photographs in the collection capture the transformation of the neighborhood’s urban fabric.

About Francesca Dal Chele 
Born in 1950, Francesca Dal Chele is an American photographer living and working in Paris, France, since 1978. Her training in photography is largely self-taught and also includes one year at the EFET Photographie in Paris and professional workshops in Arles. Beginning her practice in the early 1990s, she adopts a documentary approach, inspired by themes of identity, cultures excluded by modernity, and globalization’s devastating effects on cities and people. Since 2007, her work in Anatolia and Istanbul has focused on how globalization results in the standardization of cities, urban sprawl, and gentrification. In 2001, she was awarded the Fujifilm/UPC Prize. Her works are included in numerous public collections.
