Photography Workshop with
Martina Hoogland Ivanow
Isolation and belonging, working with juxtapositions in photography
Salt Galata
November 22 – November 27, 2015
SALT Galata, Workshop II-III
SALT and Geniş Açı Project Office’s collaboration on photography events continues with Photography Workshop by Martina Hoogland Ivanow. Participants will be invited to focus on a personal theme and their final works will be publicly presented at SALT Galata on November 27.
Swedish photographer Martina Hoogland Ivanow’s photographic image is the last link of a chain, which ties isolated observations to comprehensive insight, telling of the complexity of life. The use of dark, fascinating aesthetics in her works raises a number of questions concerning the “outside” as well as the condition of being an outsider. As such, her inquiries comprise not only the subject, but also the viewer of the image. “To me” says Hoogland Ivanow, “photography means to work with the unconscious, with technique but also with reality. I want to create a room for the viewer and I want to deal with questions rather than answers.”
The workshop will start with close presentations and a debate by Hoogland Ivanow and participants on November 22. On the second day, participants will be asked to present two separate five-image selections of what they consider their most and least pleasing works, in order to initiate a group discussion. Later they will focus on their own projects, on which they will individually exchange views with Hoogland Ivanow. Their works will be shared publicly on the last day in the workshop space.
To apply you may fill out the online application form, providing a link of your portfolio with a maximum of 30 photographs selected from one or two series until October 26. Upon Geniş Açı Project Office’s evaluation of applications, ten selected participants will be notified by October 30 for the workshop. Please note that participants are expected to present their physical print portfolios to the workshop.
Hoogland Ivanow will also conduct a Portfolio Review with a second group of applicants on November 25. Selected participants will be notified in early November.
The workshop will be held in English and free of charge.
Photography Workshop by Martina Hoogland Ivanow is supported by the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul.
