Close to 5000 people live in the village of Phek in Nagaland, close to the Indian-Myanmar border. While the population mostly cultivate rice for their own consumption, they do so as they work in cooperative groups while preparing fields, planting saplings and harvesting the grain to carry them up impossibly steep slopes. While their daily work consumes them, the rice cultivators of Phek sing. The music changes with shifting seasons; the affection they sing of directed to their friends, family and community, reflecting on stories of love, song, and the fields.
The first feature-length documentary film by The u-ra-mi-li Project, Kho ki pa lü [Up, Down, and Sideways] (2017), which is part of a body of work that looks at the connections between music and labour, will be screened for the first time in Turkey.
