A Thousand Fires (2021)
Director: Saeed Taji Farouky
91 minutes
Burmese; Turkish subtitles

Oil production in the Magway region of Myanmar is a central part of the local economy. The country has thousands of small-scale artisan pits, where workers rely on precarious, often hazardous methods. Like many others in rural Myanmar, Thein Shwe and Htwe Tin have shifted from traditional farming to operating a small oil field in hopes of earning more money. Living in a hut on a land full of holes and cranes, the family seeks to support their son’s dream of becoming a football player in hopes of giving him a better future.

Palestinian-British filmmaker Saeed Taji Farouky follows the family’s daily life and focuses on the oil industry by delving into the centuries-long relationship between oil and the human body. A well is dug, used up, left behind, and a fresh one is excavated; a father ages while his son grows up. Centering around cycles, where everything ends and starts anew, A Thousand Fires is a captivating story of life, death, and rebirth.

Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Tuesday, March 19 at 19.00, the film will be streamed online between March 22-24 via saltonline.org.

Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
