All of Our Heartbeats Are Connected Through Exploding Stars (2022)
Director: Jennifer Rainsford
77 minutes
English, Japanese; Turkish subtitles

On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit by one of the largest earthquakes in recent history, followed by a tsunami that claimed thousands of lives. With this catastrophe as a backdrop, All of Our Heartbeats Are Connected Through Exploding Stars explores how humans and nature rebuild and recover from trauma.

The film takes the viewer from the shores of Japan to the Hawaiian Islands through thousands of meters beneath the ocean surface. Satoko, a young woman struggling to overcome her trauma from the disaster, finds a way out of the darkness when she falls in love. Yasu has done over a hundred dives in search of his lost wife, and Sachiko keeps writing letters to her husband, who was taken by the wave. On the other side of the ocean, on the Hawaiian Island of Kaho’olawe, a group of volunteers gathers to clean the beach from the tsunami debris and share stories about recovery.

In her debut feature, visual artist and director Jennifer Rainsford reflects on grief and regeneration through an epic journey from life on Earth as seen from outer space to the most minor microcosmic perspectives.

Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Thursday, March 21 at 19.00, the film will be streamed online between March 22-24 via saltonline.org.

Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
