Foragers (2022)
Director: Jumana Manna
65 minutes
Hebrew, Arabic; Turkish subtitles

Artist and filmmaker Jumanna Manna explores the political and ecological effects of settler-colonialism on Palestinian land. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee, and Jerusalem, Foragers traces the Palestinian practice of foraging za’atar (a thyme-like herb) and ‘akkoub (a wild artichoke-like plant) and the impact of Israeli nature protection laws, which prohibit the collection of these native plants.

Employing fiction, documentary, and archival footage, the film portrays how these restrictions are part of the broader politics of the continued erasure of Palestinian culture. As a way of preserving values and tradition, foraging becomes an act of resistance and resilience against alienation from land. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol to courtroom defenses, Foragers poetically captures how memory is embedded in these ecological practices while raising questions around the politics of extinction.

Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Thursday, April 4 at 19.00, the film will be streamed at saltonline.org between April 29-May 5. The film will be streamed in its original language with Turkish subtitles, and can be accessed online globally.
