Book-Paper-Scissors (2019)
Director: Nanako Hirose
94 minutes, Japan
Japanese; Turkish and English subtitles
In Book-Paper-Scissors, director Nanako Hirose looks at the creative process of Nobuyoshi Kikuchi, one of Japan’s leading book designers, as he meticulously handles various design elements, from font and page layout to book jackets. The documentary film explores Kikuchi’s conceptual approach, which he describes as “opening doors to the text in my own way,” his influence on design culture, and his experiences working with authors and publishers. Through the practice of Kikuchi—who designed more than 15,000 books throughout his career—the film also sheds light on the role of an approach that blends traditional methods with new trends in contemporary design culture.
The film will be screened in its original language with Turkish and English subtitles.
