Taming the Garden (2021)
Director: Salomé Jashi
91 minutes
Georgian; Turkish and English subtitles
Taming the Garden follows the former prime minister of Georgia, who has developed an extraordinary and unsettling hobby: collecting centuries-old trees from across the country. By commissioning teams to uproot these massive trees, some as tall as fifteen-storey buildings, he has them transported to his private garden along Georgia’s coastline. To make these transplants possible, landscapes are radically altered: trees are cut down, roads are carved through mandarin plantations, and electric cables are rerouted.
Centering on the act of uprooting, director Salomé Jashi reveals a process that reshapes both natural and built environments. Exposing the asymmetries of power embedded in extraction and control, the film offers a critical reflection on ownership, displacement, and the transformation of landscapes.
Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Friday, February 20 at 19.00, the film will be streamed at saltonline.org between March 1–8. Online access is limited to audiences in Turkey.
