OCTOBER 4-9

State Legislature
Frederick Wiseman
2006, 16mm transferred to DVD, English, 217’
Without subtitles

Master documentarian Frederick Wiseman observes a three-month session of the Idaho state legislature in this tenacious portrait of the democratic process. Uniquely composed of “citizen legislators” culled from the local population, the Idaho legislature meets to deliberate on issues ranging from an outbreak of “video voyeurism,” to rising utility costs, to the salaries of high school teachers. Wiseman experiences an unexpected fascination with these mundane procedures, offering a clear-eyed look at due process in action.

OCTOBER 11-16

The Juche Idea
Jim Finn
2008, Video, English, 62’
Without subtitles

“In the late 1960s Kim Jong Il guaranteed his succession as the Dear Leader of North Korea by adapting his father’s Juche (pronounced choo-CHAY) philosophy to propaganda, film and art. Translated as self-reliance, Juche is a hybrid of Confucian and authoritarian Stalinist pseudo-socialism. The film is about a South Korean video artist who comes to a North Korean art residency to help bring Juche cinema into the 21st century. Inspired by the real-life story of the South Korean director kidnapped in the ’70s to invigorate the North Korean film industry, the film follows Yoon Jung Lee, a young video artist invited to work at a Juche art residency on a North Korean collective farm. The story is told through the films she made at the residency as well as interviews with a Bulgarian filmmaker and even a brief sci-fi movie.” – Video Data Bank

City Archives
Richard Foreman
1978, Video, English, 28’
Without subtitles

Produced at the invitation of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, this video by avant-garde theater legend Richard Foreman confronts the logic of the commission by estranging its terms beyond all recognition. Subject and object collapse; image and text submit to their deliriums; context and archive are contemplated, condensed, atomized, reconfigured. Hilariously self-conscious and intractably weird, City Archives rewrites Foreman’s theatrical language for the video screen to invent a highly articulate babble on the conundrums of institutional engagement.

OCTOBER 18-23

Yves Saint Laurent 5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris
David Teboul
2002, Video, French, 85’
With English subtitles

Set within the hermetic Parisian atelier of Yves Saint Laurent, David Teboul’s meticulously observant documentary follows the creation, production and display of the great courtier’s final prêt-a-porter collection. Less a celebration of genius than a diagram of power and its deployment through a complex hierarchy of assistants, artisans and other court attendees, this singular portrait of contemporary production unfolds with crystalline clarity.

Workers Leaving the Factory
Harun Farocki
1995, Video, English, 36’
With Turkish subtitles

Farocki returns to the origins of cinema to consider the history and implications of a persistent trope in moving image culture. From the famous actualités by the Lumière Brothers, to works by Chaplin, Lang, Pasolini and others, Farocki examines what is at stake in the representation of “exiting the factory.”

OCTOBER 25-30

I Need Your Full Cooperation
Kathy High
1989, Video, English, 28’
Without subtitles

“Juxtaposing feminist readings of medical tracts, narratives of patient treatment and archival footage, I Need Your Full Cooperation reveals the evolution of women’s relationship to modern medicine. The video dramatizes Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “rest cure” in an adaptation of her 1892 story The Yellow Wallpaper, and includes critical commentary by activist/writer Barbara Ehrenreich and historian Carroll Smith-Rosenberg.” – Video Data Bank

Stereo
David Cronenberg
1969, 35mm transferred to DVD, English, 62’
With Turkish subtitles

Before his turn to cerebral, low-budget horror films, David Cronenberg produced Stereo, a wry, avant-garde feature. Set in the hypothetical Canadian Academy of Erotic Inquiry, the film chronicles experiments in psychosexual telepathy.

Crimes of the Future
David Cronenberg
1970, 35mm transferred to video, English, 70min
With Turkish subtitles

Set in the aftermath of a plague triggered by modern cosmetics, which has killed off all sexually mature women, this chilling exercise in bio-dystopian science fiction centers on the intrigues and experiments of a dermatological clinic called the House of Skin.
