In Praise of Nothing (2017)
Director and screenwriter: Boris Mitić
78 minutes
English; Turkish subtitles

“One day, Nothing runs away from home, tired of being misunderstood. It crosses eight mountains and eight seas and arrives in our lost valley… But who am I to say ‘I’ or ‘we’? Am I really Nothing or just my ego’s mercenary? They say I can only be hinted at and never shown, unlike any other thing currently unknown. But I am actually there in every shot, if you bother to find me. If you don’t, imagine that what you see is what I see. Or just enjoy the scenery and let your mind roam freely. And don’t worry, I certainly won’t take it personally.

What Nothing would say to us if it could speak? Serbian filmmaker Boris Mitić’s In Praise of Nothing (2017) is a “whistleblowing documentary parody” on Nothing, which is composed of fixed shots filmed by 62 cinematographers in 70 countries over eight years. Narrated by Iggy Pop, Nothing delivers a monologue in rhyming verse on existence as well as all it sees on earth—asking some incredibly naïve questions and cruelly judging humanity at times—and tries to defend the importance of its role in the universe.
