Kraliçe ML
Channel Studio
February 5, 2020
The fourteenth edition of Kraliçe is designed by Channel Studio, a creative technology studio based in New York.
Channel approached Kraliçe ML as an experiment in machine learning processes to create new media out of archival materials, drawing on previous versions of Kraliçe and SALT Research collections, as well as a custom-built neural network trained on over 50 thousand fonts. The new edition consists of newly generated letterforms based on latent embeddings from the thirteen previously commissioned iterations of S-A-L-T letters.
Kraliçe is a typographic system by Project Projects (today Wkshps) that explores the transformation of immaterial goods through networks. Originally created as the identity program for SALT, Kraliçe is an open system that allows for accrued meaning over time. The institutional mark is distributed throughout the typeface as the four letters S-A-L-T. New designers are invited to reinterpret these four
characters on an ongoing basis, thereby reframing the institution’s identity.
Kraliçe is based on the typeface Queen (2004) by Timo Gaessner, 123buero.
