With over 2,700 small and large hydroelectric power plants planned or under construction in the Balkans, the last free-flowing rivers of Europe are under great threat. The Balkan River Defence, a collective of volunteers initiated by Rok Rozman, a Slovenian rowing Olympic champion, has the mission of protecting these rivers and providing sustainable alternatives through education and adventure sports by supporting a network of local river activists. The Undamaged follows a group of kayakers who spend thirty-six days paddling through twenty-three rivers in six countries, from Slovenia to Albania, to expose the last wild rivers of Europe and the dams destroying them.

The Balkan Peninsula cradles the continent’s last wild rivers and supports abundant wildlife and healthy, intact ecosystems. These rivers are one of the most important hotspots for biodiversity, especially fish and molluscs, hosting many threatened as well as endemic species. The documentary explores a community of people in resistance, protecting these pristine, wild rivers for a better future.

SALT’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder, Garanti BBVA. The films will only be accessible to online audiences in Turkey.
