Salt’s screening program Is this our last chance? calls attention to climate change and its impact on Earth. This year’s edition, supported by Garanti BBVA, addresses the implications of climate change on biodiversity, ecosystem resources, and human and non-human beings, with a selection of seven documentary films from Turkey, Palestine, Spain, Kenya, Denmark, Sweden, and Germany.

Declining rainfall and soil loss have profoundly affected the traditional life practices of indigenous communities across the world, and how they relate to their immediate surroundings. Meanwhile, marine habitats are getting increasingly polluted with oil and plastic, and those working to reduce human-induced environmental damage are facing more challenging issues than ever. The 2024 selection of Is this our last chance? looks at the relationships between humans and non-humans in the context of climate change, focusing on the notions of mourning, loss, and repair.

Stories from different geographies underscore the subtle interconnectedness of life on the planet: In the primordial forest of Hambach in West Germany, environmental activists face police intervention as they sit-in to protest the clearance of the forest for the expansion of the lignite coal mine, while in and around Bingöl, Turkey, a small group is struggling to preserve the age-old tradition of foraging. On the Hawaiian Island of Kaho’olawe, a group of volunteers meet regularly to clear the shore of tsunami debris and share stories about survival and recovery, while in a forest on the outskirts of Barcelona, an elderly shepherd living next to a high-tech laboratory for animal experiments fears the future of his livelihood.

Following the free-admission screenings between February 29-March 24 in the Walk-in Cinema at Salt Beyoğlu, all films will be accessible online via saltonline.org. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.

The 2024 edition of Is this our last chance? is programmed by Fatma Çolakoğlu and Eylül Şenses from Salt.
