Salt Research’s main space on the ground floor of Salt Galata has been named in memory of Gregory Michael Kiez (1962-2012), one of the founders of Global Ports Holding and a former board member of Global Investment Holdings. Supported by Global Ports Holding and Global Investment Holdings, the venue will serve its users as Salt Research Gregory Michael Kiez Hall between 2024-2034.

Salt Research comprises a specialized library, extensive archives, and online content focusing on visual practices, the built environment, social life, and economic history. Over 2,000,000 archival sources digitized by the institution are accessible online via archives.saltresearch.org. Featuring a collection of over 100,000 publications and periodicals, the Salt Research spaces on the ground floor and floor -1 host around 50,000 users annually.

Spreading over an area of 650 square meters, the main space of Salt Research opened with the foundation of Salt in 2011. The space received the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continental Europe Interior Design Award in 2016 for its design by ŞANALarc, and has been used by students, academics, and independent researchers interested in the fields of modern and contemporary art, architecture, design, and social and economic history. In 2017, Salt Research Ferit F. Şahenk Hall opened on floor -1 of Salt Galata due to the need for space for an expanding collection of publications and the growing number of users.

The support of Global Ports Holding and Global Investment Holdings will enable Salt Research to improve user services, upgrade the existing software and hardware, and implement new technologies in the field of libraries and archives. It will also facilitate the development of the institution’s library and archival collections focusing on Turkey, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Eastern Europe and the diversification of online content through digitization projects. Salt Research Gregory Michael Kiez Hall will continue to provide a platform for co-learning, discussion, and production.
