The exhibition Dark World, on view at Salt Galata, investigates the intricate story of the film of the same title, situating it within the cultural landscape of 1950s Turkey. It traces the narratives surrounding the film, which became an eclectic work shaped by the production process, commercial interests, censorship mechanisms, and ideological tensions of the time.

Organized in parallel with the exhibition, “They found something in everything” is a screening program that draws on the film’s interactions and intersections with various genres, including melodrama, social realism, propaganda, documentary, and ethnographic film. The program takes its title from the headline of a 1998 interview with Metin Erksan, director of Karanlık Dünya [Dark World], in which he addressed the censorship board’s approach to the film. The selection brings together five films from diverse geographies between the 1940s and 1950s, exploring the interplay of genres and the intellectual climate of the period.

Programmed by Gülce Özkara from Salt, the free-admission screenings will take place in the Walk-in Cinema at Salt Beyoğlu between October 4-23.

Built on a long-term interdisciplinary research project by artist Mike Bode and screenwriter Caner Yalçın, the exhibition Dark World is on view at Salt Galata until December 14.
