SALT Beyoğlu, Walk-in Cinema

The third performance of Expeditions in Sound and Music, a collaborative series between SALT and Undomondo, will feature Nude on Sand. The program will take place in the Walk-in Cinema at SALT Beyoğlu on Wednesday December 19 at 19.00 and is open to all.

Nude on Sand is a musical collaboration between artist Jenny Hval and improvisational guitarist Havard Volden. Together they defy the notions of how a guitar/voice duo should sound, allowing the music to seamlessly shift between naive blues, spoken word and pop song fragments. The lyrics follow these abrupt changes with endearing absurdity, evoking the workings of the blogosphere as much as of poetry.

The eponymous debut album of Nude on Sand was released in 2012 on SOFA Music, a Norwegian label dedicated to free improvisation.

Jenny Hval is a writer, journalist, recording and sound artist based in Norway. She has released two albums under the alias Rockettothesky before releasing her third album Viscera under her own name with the experimental Norwegian label Rune Grammofon. When Viscera was released in 2011, WIRE magazine described the record as “a stunning achievement both conceptually and musically.” Multidisciplinary and transgressive are words often employed to describe her art, but Jenny Hval’s polyphonic artistry is in fact seamlessly interwoven between musical, literary, visual and performative modes of expression.

From the school of unconventional guitarists like Keith Rowe and Jim O’Rourke, Norwegian electro and acoustic guitarist Håvard Volden, is known in the music world for his improvisations with Toshimaru Nakamura and tabletop guitar experiments with Daniel Grønvold alongside his work for Jenny Hval’s third album Viscera.

The performance is free.
