Calling attention to the environmental and social aspects of climate change, the 2025 edition of Salt’s screening program Is this our last chance? offers a reflection on humanity’s dependence on water and the consequences of its exploitation. From the struggles of communities against environmental injustice to the long-term impacts of industrialization, each film underscores water as both a source of life and a battleground for survival.

Silence of the Tides focuses on the Wadden Sea, one of the world’s largest uninterrupted intertidal zones, spanning the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. Leviathan captures the harsh and chaotic reality of the fishing industry in North America. The Forgotten Space looks at container cargo—a mode of transport that has extensively reshaped global logistics and port cities since the 1950s. Şarap Rengi Deniz [Wine Dark Sea] addresses the impact of climate change in the Mediterranean, where temperatures are rising much faster than the global average. Water and Power reveals how water scarcity in Los Angeles reshapes the urban landscape. Living Water examines the ecological, social, and economic dimensions of Jordan’s growing water crisis, focusing on the Wadi Rum desert. Drawing from the idea of water as a vessel of memory, El botón de nácar [The Pearl Button] intertwines the histories of the Indigenous water nomads of Chilean Patagonia and the victims of the Pinochet dictatorship through two pearl buttons as symbolic connectors. In Our Water follows the struggle of a New Jersey family in the 1980s to expose the dangers of environmental contamination after discovering toxic pollution in their well.

From rising sea levels and resource scarcity to political control and ecological destruction, the selection highlights water not just as a natural resource but as a shared commons shaping ecosystems, economies, and ways of life. It raises issues surrounding the future of the planet and the urgent need for sustainable coexistence with Earth’s most vital resource.

The 2025 edition of Is this our last chance? is programmed by Fatma Çolakoğlu and Alâ Taleb from Salt.
